Niles met Matilda from Ghana on social media. Matilda had sent him a friend request two years before he went to meet her in person. Niles had proposed to Matilda on video call, and she immediately started planning her wedding festivities back home. Little did Matilda know that Niles wished to postpone the wedding. He was hiding a major secret from his future wife.

Niles had shown fans around his workplace during his first episode in season 4. Niles explained that he always loved standing up for people who were just like him so they could become the best versions of themselves. He said that it was the reason he loved his job as a peer advocate. Niles was curious about who was going to replace him and take the “assistive technology” classes when he went to Ghana. Niles’ LinkedIn revealed that he worked as an Information Technology and Independent Living Specialist from November 2022 to June 2024.

Niles Was Shocked When He Was Fired

Niles was keeping a major secret from Matila when he flew to meet her. He was too afraid to talk to Matilda about how he wasn’t feeling ready to marry her yet. Niles didn’t have the financial security of a job to assure Matilda that he was going to give her a comfortable life in America. Niles revealed he had received a termination letter stating he “wasn’t working out” at his position. Niles didn’t expect to have to leave his job at such a crucial phase in his life.

Niles wasn’t prepared for the additional costs he would have to bear in Ghana, such as the money Matilda needed for the knocking and wedding ceremonies. Niles ended up combining their knocking ceremony and wedding ceremony into a single event. Niles only had $109 in his bank. He was required to pay the bride price of 4700 Ghanian cedis, which came to around $400. Niles was embarrassed when he asked Mr. Arc for the rest of the money. He also needed money to be able to pay for the gifts, etc.
