’90 Day Diaries’ Star Ella Johnson Reveals She and Johnny Chao Split After Long-Distance Drama
Another 90 Day Fiancé couple seemingly bites the dust! 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days star Ella Johnson revealed she and Johnny Chao split, citing the challenges and drama of their long-distance relationship as the breaking point.
“I just don’t think I can handle this anymore,” Ella, 33, told viewers during episode 3 of 90 Day Diaries season 6, which aired on TLC on Monday, April 21.
During her return to 90 Day Diaries, Ella shared life updates while revealing that she shed 80 pounds and was currently working full-time at her grandmother’s ranch in Idaho. She also dropped a bombshell that she hadn’t yet told her mother — Johnny didn’t go back to China after leaving Idaho as he claimed. Instead, he traveled to Arizona to visit another woman. At the time, the single dad claimed “nothing romantic” happened and the pair stayed together.
“I get this message recently from a girl from Arizona saying that like she’s dating him and they’re together,” she explained. “I confronted Johnny, who did admit that after leaving me in Idaho, he went to Arizona to see this other woman, that he had been talking to you for a while before coming here to America to meet me. And he went to stay with her for three days before going back to China.”
In Touch exclusively reported that Ella and Johnny were in “limbo” by September 2023, as sources revealed that, “Ella begged Johnny not to go to Arizona, but he did anyways and is now saying he should not have, and he feels bad.”
According to the source, the woman allegedly met Johnny as “a fan” through social media, but he also video chatted with her and sent her money. The situation put a strain on Ella and Johnny’s relationship, as the insider said, “Ella does not think Johnny cares for her.” Likewise, the source did not believe Johnny valued Ella.
One month later, sources exclusively told In Touch that Johnny and Ella were “trying to work things out” after the China native’s trip to Arizona.
“Relationships are [messy] even more so now in this day and age than 30 years ago. And 50 years ago, interpersonal relationships were made IN PERSON, not through a screen, and people can be different on text and in real life,” the insider explained in October 2023. “We have seen it. So, for him to have a backup plan isn’t horrible, but it sucked for sure.”
Fans were first introduced to Ella and Johnny on 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days season 6, which premiered on TLC in December 2021. The couple met through a dating site catering to white women seeking Asian men, but their plans to meet in person were repeatedly postponed due to COVID-19 spikes and strict travel restrictions that delayed Johnny’s journey from China to the U.S.
Ella began to grow frustrated with the divorced father of one and it wasn’t until June 2023 that she revealed that Johnny finally had plans to visit her. “Says he will be here around the fourth,” she told fans via her Instagram Story. “So I guess you will see. Beats me if it will happen or not.”
Johnny finally arrived in Idaho on July 5, 2023, spending a month in Ella’s home state before announcing on Instagram that he was heading back to China on August 28, 2023, to earn more money before returning to the U.S.
